Transferring Linux?
 

I installed linux on an spare small drive a few months ago to check it out. Still learning but decided that I was the way to go permanently. Would moving it to the larger drivve that I want to put it on permanently be as simple as adding the drive, logging on as root, moving everything to the larger drive and shutting down, removing the small drive and rebooting? As root, can I simply copy or do i need to reinstall? Please advise.

Use the search utility on these forae to research the use of the dd command to ghost disks, from one to another. DD will copy every thing from MBR to partitions. Tar can quickly copy one partition to another, but it won't copy the MBR.

So, search the forae; read the threads; choose the route to take.

Welcome to LQ. Can you clarify what you mean when you say you want to move it "from a small spare drive to a larger drive"? Does this mean that you have Linux installed on your primary slave, but you want to move it to your primary master (which may already be running Windows) or do you mean that you just want to replace your existing drive completley with a drive that has a larger capacity? If it's the former, there are many threads discussing how to set up a dual-boot system, but if it's the latter, what I'd suggest you consider doing is to temporarily remove the small drive, reinstall Linux using the larger drive, then putting the small drive back into the cabinet and copy any of your personal data back over to the large drive. In other words, the only data that you need to preserve if you move to another hard drive is your personal data.
