In the directory /usr/share/doc/manual, you will find the SuSE Administrator's guide and User's guide. You could start by browsing through them.

Userguide and admin guide will help tou to the right direction!

For the moving files around different operating systems, you'll need to install samba
HOWTO here : http://susewiki.org/index.php?title=Samba

EDIT: oops you are using a dual boot. Well I would make ONE FAT partition for both os to use.
Linux can read windows partition, but writing data to that partition, isn't safe. And Xp can't access the linux partitions. But if you make one fat-partition, both linux and xp can read/write there.

The easy way to install software is to download the rpm-packages and install them with yast.
"RPM-packages are like .exe files in windows", so you don't need to compile them, and after installation the program will be available in under Programs menu.

Lets say we are installing firefox...
download the package somewhere. Click it and suse will ask if you want to install it with yast. Its as easy as 1-2-3. Yes tou can also install it with console in root with yast -i firefox.rpm or you could use "rpm -i firefox.rpm" .

Also check this article about YAST : http://susewiki.org/index.php?title=Add_YaST_Source

APT is also quite easy to use, it also has graphical interface if that is what you want:
