I am a :newbie: to linux so it loads up and i see it asking me for my username and pw i put that in and now what laugh if you want but i dont know what to do i installed mandrakes 9.0 everything went well but i am stumped now please help me

were are u at? at a text based logon place? gui logon place? what?

Did you configure the X Window System during the install process?

If you did and logged into a command prompt, enter
startx

If that doesn't work, please give more details.

Sounds to me like you have this great thing called linux, but now that you have it loaded up you don't know what to do with it?

Well...um...if you don't know what you wanted to do, why did you load it up?

If you want to do things with it, what is it you wanted to do?

Personally, I run my own webservice http://www.technoslave.net where I rant/rave/comment about all things, linux included. I also run my own DNS, as well as mail server. If this isn't something you wanted to do, why did you load linux again?

OK well i know what i did so wrong but no i will have to reinstall it again but before i do i need to know what my setting should be for my graphics card monitor and resolution for mandrake 9.0 ok i have a nvidia geforce fx 5200 ultra 128mb ddr my monitor is a hewlett packard v50 so what do i need to set my graphics on to get it to work because everything i tryed will not if i need to tell you more let me know and i will respond as soon as i can

Ok heres my problem I dont know how to config my X Window system to fit my comps needs. I have a GeForceFX 5200 Ultra 128mb DDR APG graphics card my monitir is a Hewlett Packard V50 can someone please tell me what i need to select in the X Windows system config to get this running

Sorry, but I don't understand. You need to add some more information. Please answer these questions:

o What happens when you boot into Linux? Do you get a boot sequence (that takes about a minute, or so)? Do you see a text prompt with the word "login" or do you see a graphic screen after booting?

o Have you set up a user? Do you have a username and a password? You should have the username "root" and a password for it. That's the administrator username and password. Have you got another username except "root"?

o If you log in, either with "root" or with another username, what do you see?

if you are at the black screen thingy

you login and type:

startx

solve your problem?
