Toshiba Satellite C850-1CV - issues with drivers.
 
Hi! :)

I am very new to Linux, since i have been using Windows for my whole life. However, since i am studying computer science, i have to expand my knowledge to other OS aswell.

Yesterday, i got a new computer from my school, a Toshiba Satellite C850-1CV. I decided that i might aswell start expanding my knowledge right away and after some research, i downloaded and installed "BackTrack5 R2".

(OS Version; Linux 3.2.6
KDE SC Version; 4.5.3
Hostname: BT )

My problem is - i can't get any acess to internet.
I have tried to install a few different versions of the drivers for the network card, but no sucess. I am also having trouble finding a proper guide to do it.
I have been sitting here for atleast 6 hours now, trying to fix it somehow. I would really appretiate a link to a turtorial and the driver.

Usually in Linux you type lspci -knn in terminal to get the information of your hardware. However to get your wireless working you could use ndiswraper and find the driver to get it working. To download ndiswraper you will need to be connected with a wire.

You could also run a live session with a more mainstream distro like Ubuntu or Linuxmint and see if these distros include support for your wireless, if they do you can pick to see what driver they are using and try to donwnload from your distro's repository and modeprobe it.

Arch is another distro that includes lots of software from their repository. I dont think they have a live CD like Ubuntu, mint, fedora, or OpenSuse. But you should try one of these or get connected with the wire for now and download and play with ndiswraper.

Hi.

After playing around with ndiswrapper and ndisgtk, i managed to find a driver and it seems like it's the right one.

I have been following this guide http://wiki.debian.org/NdisWrapper but it seems like i can't "Insert the NDISwrapper module into the kernel" ???

I have been trying different guides, googling around the whole day, with no luck.
Earlier, i could atleast get internet connection when i connected a lan cable into the laptop, but now it doesnt work either... I am clueless of what to do.

Anyway, here is some info that might give some information of how i might be able to solve this problem.

Since you are running Ubuntu.... Have you opened the system settings > software sources? One of the tabs is called Additional drivers ... see if you have some listed. Iften they are there and you may be able to use that instead of the ndiswrapper

It's empty.
Says "No proprietary drivers are in use on this system".

Nevermind. As allways, something went wrong.

The connection is very unstable, it disconnects all the time and is almost useless.
Been reading this thread and it seems like i need newer drivers, or? Checked realtek's website and couldn't find any driver for that card at all.
