toshiba laptop....what distro now?

ok i have a toshiba p105 and i have been running gust gibbon on it. but i have no sound and it does not look like this bug is going to have a good fix soon. i was wondering if anyone knows of a distro that works out of the box with a intel hda card with a contexant chip. everything else in gusty works great but its the bloody sound bug that is making me think about dual booting or switching ditros. thanks for your input and opinions.

What kernel ver are u using? Is it .16? If yea, try to switch to .15 and give it a shot. Ubuntu 7.10 is fairly new distros, it probably uses .16. I have an Acer Aspire 5050 laptop & have Fiesty installed in it (Ubuntu 7.04). When I got it ootb, it worked & I had .15 kernel. However, when I did an update to .16 kernel- the sound stopped working.

I reco trying out Ubuntu Fiesty Fawn 7.04 w/ the .15 kernel. Or try a distro which uses .15 kernel instead of .16.

But even then, you'll have to access the ALSA mixer & max out ALL the settings- including "front", "center" and "surround"

2.6.22.14 is what im using. i know that in fiesty the dsdt fix solved all problems but it does not work in gusty. there is a sound fix for it now but my modem wont work with sounds, the linuxant driver says the it cant run under custom kernels so i need to figure a way to stay with the stock kernel. as for downgrading to fiesty its not really an option because i dont want to buy another modem driver and i dont have a disk.

Just disable the acpi and you will have sound. I had the same problem, if do you a search on turning off the acpi then follow the instructions it works wonders. I resorted to reinstalling on my p105 with the acpi option off, then found a message on how to turn it off.

Hope this helps.
