Toshiba labtop complaining can't find space when dual boot XP with Linux

Goodday all,
i've a Toshiba Sutelite Inter(R) Celeron (R)M, CPU 420 @1.60GHZ, 448MB of RAM, labtop
with Microsoft XP Media center Edition, version 2002, Service pack 2 installed. modem number PsL33u-02601W

i try dual boot it with Redhat Enterprise Linux ES (2.4.21.9.EL)
the problem is that a/f partitioning and formating the hard drive and installing XP,
when trying to install Linux it will give a message saying it can't find space i reserved for the linux installation

What does "a/f" mean?

How did you reserve space for the linux install?
How much space did you reserve?
When it says it can't find enough space, does it show you how much space is on the disk and where?
At what point during the install does it say that it can't find enough space?
