Tool For Open Source Software Developing

Hi all,
Do you know what tool people used for develop an open source software. I want modify an open source software but don't know how to trace the running flow of the software. Please show me how.

you're looking for a tool called a symbolic debugger. gdb is kinda the gold standard for debuggers, but I'd recommend a frontend for it. DDD is the classic, but I've had the best luck with the KDE one, can't remember the name. It's either KDebug or KDB.

If your looking for a complete IDE (debugger, compiler and editor included) look up KDevelop or Eclipse. They include support of multiple programming languages.
