Too many open files in system

Hello everyone,

While installing a program I copied some data to my /etc/sysctl.conf file. One of the lines I copied was: fs.file-max = 512 * PROCESSES.

Now I can't do much anything. Basically every command I execute results in: Too many open files in system.

Does anyone have any idea what I can do to fix this problem?

Thanks for your help!

Boot a live CD. Mount your system partition. Edit the file to remove that line.

I don't think that the /sbin/sysctl command will evaluate a line the same way bash would, so you may want to check your other changed made as well. The entries should all be "name = value" form and not "name = expression".
