To obtain BEL sound "\a"

In my fc5 system i cannot hear the Alert sound
echo -e "\a"

Earlier in RHEL1 system there was no such problem.
Can any one tell me whats the problem and how to fix it.

Where do you run the command? In text-mode/framebuffer console? In terminal emulator under X11? What kind? What is in $TERM environment variable? What shell do you run (probably bash..)? Can you get any sound from any other application? Does that persist if you unmute and max out all the channels in alsamixer? Do you have the same problem with the freshest available Fedora release? What is in ~/.inputrc and /etc/inputrc ?
