Not sure if anyone has left this link yet, but it was one of the most helpful to me in learning some of the basics.
As far as which distrobution to choose, I'm suprised that no one has mentioned knoppix. For someone who has never used Linux before, I think Knoppix is a great distro to start with, simply becasue you don't have to worry about installing anything. Once you are mildly comfortable with linux then you can pick a distro that more suits your needs. If I had used Knoppix first when I was trying to learn Linux, then I would probably be sitting her typing this on Slack instead of RedHat. :p slight |
:D IIRC, I stole that link from you and put it in my sig.....

Yo fancypiper,
If you get many more links in your sig, then you're gonna have to start using coloured text in you posts so we can tell what's text and what's sig:D :D regards John:D |

Wow, I love to read threads as they go off topic, however since this is not General, let's do our best to keep on the original topic. If the question is finished, or if there is nothing to add to the main discussion, then let the thread drop ;)
I know I know, I'm sometimes the worst contributor to OT discussions, but you know it's my job to enforce it now, so here I am ;) Thank you for your co-operation and as a final OT note: A troglodite is (probably more than this, but it's the extent of my knowledge on it) a small slimy swampy creature in Heroes of Might and Magic that is one of the lesser attackers. You normally get a hoard of them before you even think of sending them up against anybody. Ok, that is the end of OT. Thank you for your understanding :) Cool |
cat_of_jade, if you choose Mandrake 9.1 (recommended, as the graphical installation procedure is very easy to follow), then look here for installation tips before you leap in:
http://www.mandrake.tips.4.free.fr/install.html The partitioning tool in Mandrake 9.1 is particularly slick. Having only used MS FDISK before, it was like a breath of fresh air. I used it to re-size Windows partitions and convert Windows partitions to Linux ones, all with no errors (very happy with that). |
I agree with every thing said so far, I'm a mandrake 9.1 user and I like it a lot. The advantage of Mandrake distro is that it installs as easy as windoze, easier in my opinion.
I also use a program called win4lin, it allows you to install win98 inside linux, if you don't run games it's a great transition tool to let you run some of your legacy windoze software. Running win4lin you don't have to reboot back into windoze, windoze runs inside a window of linux. The down side is it does not do 3d graphics so if you run high end games in widoze they won't run in win4lin. I also use Gimp, in place of Photoshop, for my image manipulation, it works as well as photoshop with out the price tag. |
And no MasterC, a troglodyte is someone who lives in a hole in the ground. E.g. the people who actually live where Luke Skywalker was supposed to live on tatooine, except that it's actually in Morocco (or is it Algeria or Tunisia).
