What makes you think ctrl+alt+T will open a terminal on his system? We don't even know what distro or DE he's using. ctrl+alt+T certainly doesn't work on my computer...

OP - we need more details about your system, as every Linux distribution is different.

Short cut keys are configurable. There is no combination of shortcuts (or "keybindings," to use the term more common with Linux) that can be considered default for all flavors of Linux.

For a good reference, you might start with Garrels's Introduction to Linux.

You can find a wealth of resources at The Linux Documentation Project.

Get a usb drive.
Download unetboot on your windows system and install any linux distribution from the list provided.
Change the boot order in your bios and boot from usb.
Do whatever you want. Even if you crash your system, no worries, nothing is saved, but you've gotten some experience, which in many cases is much better than knowledge.

In my opinion, there's no way to learn to ride a bicycle than by riding one. You have to do things to learn. If I waited to learn how to use Linux before I started, believe me, I'll still be waiting.

Try to find any of the "REDHAT TRAINING"( RHEL 5 is good) materials.You will learn things step by step if you follow those books.

RHEL 6 books is not informative....try to get the previous version books.

In my system ctrl+alt+T perfectly opens a terminal, I use Unity. And we were not talking about your system firstly; secondly if ctrl+alt+T did not open a terminal in OP's system, he would certainly find the proper shortcut- even a kid has such common sense.

It doesn't matter what kinds of terminals are available- the intention was to know the shell being used easily. I just pointed out one option and I am not here to show-off unnecessarily by telling one "which" terminal to open and "What are the kinds of terminals available". OP didn't ask for such "enlightening" fundamentals.

Write a blog on it. It's a thread of one who wanted to know commands. If he needs, tutor him.

I'm sorry, I just wanted to let OP know about his shell. The key-trio works in my system, I use Ubuntu so I used my shortcut, not going deep about terminals and their shortcuts. OP will certainly find the proper shortcut and know the shell he is using, that was what I thought. The thread is to let someone point to some resources about linux commands, as far as I can understand. I just wanted to help out, please be calm! :)
