Hi I am new to this so please bear with me!
My System: Laptop Maxdata Piii 600 Dual boot Me & RH7.2 serversetup as I want to run apache to do php and mySql dev.
I am having a huge problem in understanding what linux uses and how it uses differant modules to connect to the internet. I am used to windoze and IE and dialup connection.
My Lucent winmodem works as i have installed the drivers and tested in the dialup configutration and run 'debug' it dials my isp and recieves some gobblydy gook and says hppd session or something started date/time etc. From this I deduce that my modem is acceptable to linux and works OK.
I cannot get ppp dialer or netscape or mozzilla to connect, it appears that it cannot resolve the ip add etc. I take it I have not set this up correctly. the question is what do I need to get it to work. I have followed the How to's for connecting but still cannot get ppp dialer or browser to work. what am I doing wrong. can someone give me a basic checklist to go through to set this up in RH.
My isp is Freeserve - gets dynamic ip add.

In my windoze dialup I use

pw: ******
proxy settings:
HTTP:'http://www-cache.freeserve.net' PORT: 8080
FTP:'http://ww-cache.freeserve.net' PORT: 8080(where do these go)
If I try and put them in Netscape advanced settings proxy it wont accept them.
Do I have to start a ppp dialup session before I use netscape or the likes?
As you can see I do not have a clue where to go PLEASE help!

the proxy settings would go in your browser settings. personally i never even knew that freeserve had those proxies, i never used them when i was with freeserve. i always used wvdial to dial MY lucent modem, it was a damn site easier that farting about with a bunch of half built gui's. try wvdial, you can stikk all teh passwrd junk in /etc/wvdial.conf once you've made it with wvdialconf.

but.. Why did you mention Bind? i'm lost about that on, it's no use to you at all really.

Thanks for the reply, I changed my wm to kde and got it to work ok! I do not know why I can not get the gnome pppd to work as I followed all the how to's and help and yet kde I just set up the same things and it worked first time!
The proxy setting are as set up by the anytime freeserve connection cd, so I took it for granted that it would be needed with linux connection, but it wasnt?
To any other linux newbie with similiar connection problems using gnome would be to try the kde wm.
Oh the bind thing.... well besides a catchy line I at first thought that I had to 'bind' my ip address or something, dumb hey! I have read a bit more about it and realize it is for dialin not dialout
