TNT2 Driver Installation Problems

Hi there,

I am attempting to install the drivers for a TNT2 video card. I have a Diamond Multimedia Viper V770, but it is the same chipset as the TNT2 and there are no linux drivers for the V770, so the TNT2 drivers will do. I have downloaded the drivers and now have them in /home/david/

I exit out of Xserver and attempt to install the .run file and during the installation process, it stops and says:

Unable to load the kernel module 'nvidia.o'. This is most likely because the kernel module was built using the wrong kernel source file. Please make sure you have installed the kernel source files for your kernel; on Red Hat Linux systems, for example, be sure you have the 'kernel-source' rpm installed. If you know the correct kernel source files are installed, you may specifiy the hernel source path with the '--kernel-source-path' command line option.

This is the first device I have ever installed on linux and am lost. I am running Red Hat 9.0. Please help. Many thanks in advance.

Hi there Doctor_j!!!

Welcome to LQ. Well, the problem is exactly what it says. Nvidia drivers need the kernel source to build. If you go into your Redhat add/remove packages, search for kernel-source.rpm and install it, you will be prompted to insert one of your Redhat CD's. The installer will take care of the rest. Then run again the installation. It will work :)

Good luck!

Ahhhhh, I see! I'll give it a go!

Thanks Megaman! (hehehe, I feel like Eddie Murphy in the Nutty Professor when he says something like "I lost 400 pounds in 5 seconds - Thanks Megashake!")

I feel like a bit of an idiot.

I installed the kernel development packages in the add/remove packages function, but I was still unable to install the driver.

So I went and download the kernel-source and installed it - but it was the kernel-source for Red Hat Enterprise 3.0. So, of course it did not work again.

I have now found the correct kernel-source for Red Hat 9.0. Should I uninstall the 3.0 kernel-source before I install the 9.0, or will the 9.0 just overwrite the 3.0?

Thanks

David

Ok, now I am confused. I installed the following kernel-soruce, which is the latest version (I think - am I wrong?):
kernel-source-2.4.20-30.9.i386.rpm

When I try and install the driver, it still stops during the installation and give me the same message as before.

Is this the right kernel-source? I didn't see anything about a kernel-source.rpm in the add/remove packages function, so I installed the relevent kernel development packages. Still can't install the drivers.

Where am I going wrong?

dude, i use redhat 9 and have a TNT2
during the install, it asked me which video card
i have, I chose TNT2, and it worked fine. If you dont
have a bunch of data you dont want to lose, maybe you
should just start fresh.

Doctor_j 05-01-2004 10:05 AM

yes, during the install it is very stright forward, but when installing drivers etc it is different, well, so I have found

I have considered re-installing red hat 9, but that would be cheating really and I wouldn't be learning anything about linux.

cheers for the info
