tinny sound in ubuntu

Hi.. I have Ubuntu Linux (Breezy.. 5.10) installed. When I first installed it, everything worked well with the audio. After I installed a bunch of new things (xine and xine libs, a new kernel for my cpu, and various other packages that I would be using), the sound started sounding tinny from XMMS. It seems as if my configuration file somewhere was modified. What are the most likely places to look for this? Thanks!!!

I have a t43 with a generic AC97 sound card, btw. I am a newbie at Linux, but am pretty good at following simple instructions.

PS: I tried uninstalling XINE completely and related files to see if that fixed it, and I had no luck.

try running the command "alsaconf" as root (or "sudo alsaconf" on Ubuntu) to reconfigure the sound card.

I don't seem to have alsaconf. I tried to find the package in the package manager, but had no luck. I grep'ed for alsa in /usr/bin and /usr/sbin. I found: alsactl and alsamixer. Any ideas for how I can run alsaconf?
