Time like these...feel so newbie -->Themes

I'm pulling my freaking hair out.

I'm running RedHat 9.0 (and starting to regret not keeping 8.0). I'm new to linux (about 6 months on it). I absolutely hate bluecurve. It makes me feel old with the big icons, bad wallpaper, and just over lack of any flare.

I'm running Gnome (whatever version comes with RH 9.0, I think it's 2.2 ??? How do I find out exactly)

So I go looking for themes. At freshmeat, there seems to be tons. Now what the hell is gtk1.0, gtk2.0, sawfish, metacity, etc... What are those. Just when I feel like I'm getting the hang of it, something that should be so simple gets be totaly hung up.

Anyway, I got themes. I tried everything. I tried using gnomes theme installer. I tried unzipping and putting into ~/.themes. I tried unzipping and putting into /usr/share/themes. I can seem to get anything to work.

My exact questions are these:

1) When I go to freshmeat, under which section should I be grabbing themes from? I assume I click "GTK" in the "Gnome" section. But those themes are lame.

2) What is gtk1.x and gtk2.x.

3) Is gnome a "desktop" manager and the other things some other type of "desktop" managers?

4) Generally, how the hell do I just install a freaking theme that looks good. I kind of like this one: "14x on Freshmeat" Can I use this one?

5) Where are the wallpaper images kept? Is there a certain place, or do you just point what ever program loads the background image to what ever .png file you want anywhere on your system?

Sorry for such a newbie question, but I've been googling, searching threads here, looking at FAQs, but they all just say, "Use Gnome theme installer" or unzip to appropriate folders.

I really do like Linux, but man, sometimes it can make feel like a first grader going to school naked...

Thanks in advance!

Look if you don't understand what Windows Managers are then your defintely a newbie....

But no real big deal know themes like Gtk 1.0 and Gtk 2.0 are like what you think designed for gnome versions 1.0 and gnome versions 2.0 the latest version of gnome I know of is gnome 2.2

Now this sawfish, metacity, enlightment, blackbox and Windows managers. Are nothing more then other types of graphical user interfaces you can adopt. These GUI's are not as sharp as KDE and Gnome but there simple desktops that don't use up that many resources the computer has...

There fun to play. They expand your mind into relizing what do you really need from a desktop GUI....

If you want to load one start with Windows Manager it will be a bit confusing at first and will require you to use the command line sometimes......

Last but not least I would say go back to Redhat 8.0 because 9.0 doesn't offer that much more but is a bit slower then 8.0.....

later.......
