Time commands from command line

How do I check the system time and/or set it from the command line?

Got to the date command, but can't get it to set the time/date.

you need to be root
date [MMDDhhmm[[CC]YY][.ss]]
MM = month
DD Day
hh hour
mm minute
cc century
yy year
ss seconds
for example
2005 march 9 10.14 am can be set as
date 030910142005.00
should set the date

All times are GMT -5. The time now is 04:21 AM.
