Lightbulb Thunderbird with Enigmail/GnuPG needs Seahorse to work in RHEL 7 w/Gnome3 desktop

I'm just passing along a lessons learned from trying to set up OpenPGP encryption using Thunderbird in my desktop Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.1: Kgpg (Manage GPG encryption keys) breaks my setup, meaning after I initially was successful in creating new PGP keys, shortly thereafter the passphrase doesn't work anymore and the keys are trash. I don't know why RHEL software provides Kgpg Key Manager as an option to install in Gnome3 desktop but that's what I initially tried. Starting over, I created new keys using 'Passwords and Keys' utility under Applications>Utilities, which apparently is a Seahorse program and I was able to create new keys that stayed good (meaning no more passphrase failures). I was very frustrated with the online help out there suggesting gpg-agent was the issue, but it was not.

Here's what I installed from Applications>Software's YUM package manager:
1. seahorse (A Gnome application for managing encryption)
2. seahorse-nautilus (PGP encryption and signing for nautilus)
3. gnupg2 (Utility for secure communication and data storage)
4. Removed Kgpg (Manage GPG encryption keys) and quit trying to troubleshoot gpg-agent - forget about it.

After I did the above I rebooted and Thunderbird/Enigmail worked seamlessly with Seahorse and everything worked smoothly. I'm new at all this PGP stuff, so I learn the hard way. But now it all works and I can send and receive and encrypt/decrypt/sign emails and files.

the VERY FIRST THING !!! - yes bold and cap!!!
remove your email address from posts!!!!

this site is crawled by spam bots

your email is about to be hit with a lot of spam!
you might have to create a new account for your mail

"Kgpg" is a KDE gui for the KDE desktop and for "dolphin" file manager
not the Nautilus Gnome desktop file manager

it is not a surprise at all that a program for a DIFFERENT desktop manager is causing issues when used on the wrong desktop manager

Hi John VV

Thanks for the warning about my showing my email address. I removed it. No spam yet, but when it comes I'll deal with it.

I have to wonder why a KDE package is offered/allowed by RHEL to be put on a Gnome desktop, but I now know not to use those. I've used KDE programs in the past on the Gnome desktop but this is the first time it caused me a problem (that I know of). But to play it safe I'll keep it all clean from now on - Gnome stuff only, for Gnome.
