Thunderbird icon problems on Linux Linpus
 

Just installed Thunderbird 3.0.11. Working fine except that I have two Desktop entries which just showed "Email" with no picture. Having fiddled about to get a single entry and failed I now find that clicking either one no longer works. Command line from terminal runs it OK.
(This is all on an Acer Aspire One - installed TBird to solve failure of installed mail client to work with latest Tiscali POP setup.
Any help in getting the logo to display and work much appreciated

Why did you install such an old version? The current version of Tbird is 6.0?

Good point! As a Linux novice I found a couple of blogs which agreed on a process and so used them. As part of my subsequent fiddling I discovered Package Manager and tried loading Tbird from there. Not good - it's loaded version 2 with no option to update and no change on the icon problem. However I have managed to get the Icon to come up and work when clicked. I changed the email app sequence line in "config/xfce4/desktop", replacing "AMS" with "mozilla-thunderbird". Although it now works 2 is crude compared with even 3 so I will probably have to remove it and start all over again.

Alpha, it's always I good idea to mention what Distro and what version of the Distro you're using. It becomes virtually impossible to help you without some basic information. If you read the "sticky" at the head of the Newbie forum there is some information.
"Icon" doesn't really mean anything in the way you're using the word. An icon is a small picture that typically represents some task or software. It's an image; it doesn't "work when clicked". I guess you mean a desktop shortcut to the Thunderbird app. Is that correct? Anyway please give us more information about what system you're using and you'll get better help.

See the title of the thread :) OK, does not mention a version.

OK - it's Linpus Linux Lite v1.0.13E. And yes I'm using icon to mean desktop shortcut.

I think it's an exception when package managers upgrade packages to newer versions (unless you have a distro that is so-called rolling release and updates to the latest an greatest). They will only apply security updates.

I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 and the firefox version is something like 3.6.x while the current firefox version is 5.something (if I'm not mistaken). Does not really matter to me as long as I can visit sites like LQ ;)

I would make sure that you still receive updates for everything you use. I dropped Linpus when I did not see an expected kernel update; they might have been slow or never have fixed the vulnerability in the kernel.

If you no longer get updates, it might be time to start looking for another distro.

Alpha, right-clicking on the desktop might give you a menu. I don't know what desktop Linpus uses so I can't be too specific. It may have an item like "Create New" which, when clicked, gives you another menu with an item like "link to an application". You click on that and then enter the information it requires and point it to where the Thunderbird icon is and Bob's your uncle. :) It (the icon) is typically found in the "icons" subdirectory of the thunderbird folder.
