Thumbnails are blue boxes instead of pic preview

I had to rebuild my ubuntu system today. All seems back to normal but.
The jpg pics are not the small preview images. They are small blue boxes.
And the .avi files are not the small preview pics, but just the reel symbol. Any ideas how I can restore the image previews in the thumbnails.

Ubuntu Feisty.

Thanks.

Somehow /dev/sda1 got a wrong UUID. I corrected it, and all is well now.
