Three Questions
I'm new to linux but trying to learn. Could anyone answer the three following questions.
1. How do I run a program from text mode. I know the ls and cd commands but how do i get the program to run ounce I'm in the right partition? 2. Why do people call linux a linux box? 3. How can I get administrator status in x mode. |
4. How do i open webpages in text mode?

computer are boxes do you mean to launch a prog as root ? |
Thanks for answering the box question. Obvious, now that I think about it. Im not well up on running commands as roots. Any chance of answering the other three questions? It will save me being embaressed by asking my friends.

Hi
ok To run a prog it text mode try just entering the programs name in the terminal window, else if you are running a program from a certain directory that is not in your path , go into the directory and type ./PROGRAM NAME To run a program as root press alt+f2 and look at the options , check the box that says "Run as a different user" and fill in the blanks cheers |
thanks for that synapse. just one question left, how do I open a webpage in text mode.
|
Maybe you should consider a x system for your box:)
What distro do you have, and what did you install with the distro. Anyways, if you already dont know, type startx and you might find yourself in a somewhat easier environment... Just a thought... |
I tried typing the name of the program from its directory and i get command not found. i also tried typing ./program name and get the same text.

I've got mandrake 9.1 and i was using a konsol in x. However I am studying linux and trying to switch from windows. typing startx would defeat the purpose, as linux is as slow as windows in x and i want to be competent with text mode. maybe the fact that i am trying to run programs in a consol and not in true text mode is the reason why I get command not found?
|
ok, ok, not trying to push anything on you.
But I disagree with your statement that x on linux is as slow as windows, mentioning fluxbox or blackbox, both surprisingly fast and stable... :) |
I am not asking for the world. All I want to know is what command in text mode opens/runs a program and I have tried just typing the name of the file as in ms-dos from its directory and got command not found.

thanks so much. All I wanted was a few simple answers and because its friday night and the alcohol is flowing, the majority of the remarks are sarcastic. Enough for me for tonight, time to empty the bottles.
