Three Problems (Sound, Samba, and LS)

Hello all.

It is very nice to be actually posting to this board from my Linux machine. This OS is going to take quite a lot of getting used to but I'd better be using it on a regular basis now after all the work it took getting it to work :)

I have three smaller problems that I am currently facing.

1. I just became aware of the fact that sound doesn't work on this machine when I tried testing the sounds in gAIM. I have onboard sound and I didn't think there was anything special I needed to do, but I guess there is (or something isn't working properly). Any ideas as to how I can troubleshoot this and get sound up and running? I am using Slackware 9.0 and Fluxbox.

2. I just noticed that I am getting strange results with "ls" in the folder /usr/local/bin. After all the normal listings, I get the following:
\340}\016l\=\v\340\r\230{\272\006\341\214\373\271\325
\354\373\260\373\356\271\321\362\343\002v\357\260\027\033f\216\036\200\024\003\320\320
\366\003\355\334\373\317\235\@\001
\366\=}\255\207#n\324\344\252\275\363
\366\371\333\357\265u\367fS\327\264\221Z\336\363\275\251s\330\313\=\236\326\372\034\@\026\301\357\26 4\300\350\373\351\361\273\276]\3533\253\233\252\263\331\017}\336}\353\3404\001\366\300\002\200\221\261n\003\255\253m\255_s\336glP\ 036\356\371\2368}\256\267O{\335\312
This doesn't happen in any other folder. Why is this happening and how can I get rid of it?

3. I know this is a big question that probably deserves its own thread, but I thought I'd throw it in here for good measure. This computer is connected to a Win98 computer via a direct crossover cable. The printer I use is connected to that computer and I share a couple of folders to be able to access them from here. I was interested in getting SAMBA up and running to accomplish this under Linux. However, I've started reading up on it and the configuration file doesn't even exist even though there is quite a lot of documentation sitting around in various places and I think SAMBA comes with Slackware. What is the very first step to get it up and running in the first place (i.e. creating the files)? I notice that I have the following two files:
/var/log/packages/samba-2.2.8-i386-1
/var/log/scripts/samba-2.2.8-i386-1
If that first one is a samba package that I just have to install... what is the command to install slack packages?

Thank you in advance for your help,
JMagi

question 3........../var/log/packages/scripts means samba is already installed!! you just have to read up on getting it started. from a term window......type-- man samba

question 1.........goto /etc/rc.d/rc.modules and uncomment the line pertaining to your sound driver......uncomment=delete the #(hash mark)

question 2.......not sure, will look thru my /usr/local/bin and see if I can create the same oddity that your showing........

<edit/>cannot recreate /usr/local/bin weirdness

the Samba config file is in...../etc/smb.conf
