Third party device drivers

I am trying to piece together the steps needed to take a third party device driver provided by a hw manufacturer's website, cross-compile it as a module, and then use it on an embedded target.

One question that comes to mind is, once I've got the module compiled, where do I put it in the filesystem, and how do I get the OS to load it on boot? The driver I am referring to is for a PCI card, so the hardware will be there when the system starts up. The version of Linux I am using is 2.6.10.

Thanks for any help!

Yes, the kernel version is 2.6.10. The distribution is from Freescale for a Coldfire processor.
