it can't and it will tell you to umpty it out. thats why its recomended that you have a /var partition. If it was rolled into the / partition as a directory it would or could eventually fill the whole thing and slow the whole system down if not crash it.

Really the minimum you need for /var if 500 mb. I run with that and have never filled it. Or emptied it.

Hey dude-

I understand your frustrations. I just attempted to install three different distros on one machine just to see if it can get up and running - all failed (Mandrake 9.2, Redhat 9, Slackware 9) and all failed. All hardware tested fine too. I think I should put a sticker inside this machine (an MS-5130 with a Pentium MMX 200, 128 Megs RAM) saying "made for Windows" L<
