"The modem does not respond"

This is what I get on a newly installed MDK 9.2 OS. Kppp comes up fine but can't find the modem. I have searched all the threads (and there are many) but I haven't found a solution. I typed kppp in a console and got this- Xlib:extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0". The device I'm using is /dev/ttyS1. I've tried all the others and this one gets me further than the others. I've got everything else ready to go, can someone please help me on this? US Robotics 56K internal.

I'm not sure that is a real hardware modem or not. If it is, here is a way to configure it. If you don't have the setserial command, you should be able to install it with urpmi setserial, IIRC
# Configuring a real hardware pci modem
To configure a pci modem, open an x terminal and su - to the root account:
Code:

[fancy@tinwhistle fancy]$ su -
Password:
[root@tinwhistle root]# cat /proc/pci

Look for your modem in the returned list. Look for something similar to mine:
Code:

  Bus  2, device  2, function  0:
Communication controller: PCI device 151f:0000 (TOPIC SEMICONDUCTOR Corp) (rev 0).
      IRQ 5.
      I/O at 0xc400 [0xc407].

With this info, I use the setserial command:
Code:

[root@tinwhistle root]# setserial /dev/ttyS2 irq 5 port 0xc400 uart 16550a
Then I test the modem with the internet connection wizard and it works. I edit /etc/rc.d/rc.local and enter the setserial command:
Code:

[root@tinwhistle root]# pico -w /etc/rc.d/rc.local
My file for an example
Code:

#!/bin/sh
# Redhat /etc/rc.d/rc.local file
# This script will be executed *after* all the other init scripts.
# You can put your own initialization stuff in here if you don't
# want to do the full Sys V style init stuff.

touch /var/lock/subsys/local
# configure modem
setserial /dev/ttyS2 irq 5 port 0xc400 uart 16550a

Now, it remains configured after a reboot.

I suggest you read the modem howto if you have the howtos installed.

I ran the wizard and it said "Error Kppp" /etc/resolv.conf is missing or can't be read.

My /etc/resolv.conf file for a sampel
Code:

domain infoave.net
nameserver 206.74.254.2
nameserver 204.116.57.2

Change to reflect your ISP values.

I can't find that file, so maybe it is missing, how can I create it? Also I can't get "home" to launch any files, all the permissions are ok. Is there anything in rpmdrake that I might have removed that would cause that?

As root, use your favorite text editor and create it.

I don't understand the question.

When I click on the "home" icon on the desktop it doesn't open up to "home". Access to files through Konquerer only. I created the /etc/resolv.conf file. Should I write info from my other computer to it? I'm still getting "modem does not respond" though. The first time I ran # cat /proc/pci I got alot of data but I couldn't pick a modem or connection device out of it. When I run it now I get nothing, just a repeat of the command. Typed #cat /proc/pci wrong. Now, would USB controller be it? Nothing that looks like yours.

You should see an entry for a "Communication controller" somewhere in the list if you have a pci modem card.

Sorry, I don't use kde, so I'm not familiar with Konquerer. I would assume that the "home" icon would launch Konquerer in the folder /home/<user>.

Thanks for the help. I bagged it, the sound card didn't work either.
