The maximum numerical value of the user's ID

Hi there

as we know or as some of us know that each application in linux has an ID number.

so,
users ID number from which number they start and what is maximum number that linux box (red hat) can handle? is there a default number or not?

can you please fill me up with details like in which direcotry can I find it in the linux? and whether I can modify it or not?

I really really need to know this because my company has lots of users account in there linux box so I need the maximum number for the ID users in the box

I don't know specifically about Redhat, but 2.2 kernels can handle a mximum of 65 536 users and 2.4+ can handle over 4.2 billion (read this recently in a comptia linux+ book). On Redhat ID numbers from 0 to 499 are reserved for system use and then from then on, its up to you what you choose for your users IDs.

Not from a website, but from Sybex Linux+ Study Guide (second edition by Roderick W Smith). The figure could be limited to a certain figure depending on distros, but I can't find the name of the file where this setting can be changed.
