The GNOME "Start Menu"

Hey folks,

I am enjoying Ubuntu Edgy on my Sony laptop.

I'd like to know more about how GNOME stores items for its "Start Menu," to use the Windows phrase. As many of you know, in Windows this is a simple collection of directories and shortcuts under C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\%USERNAME%\Start Menu\.

But how is this done in GNOME?

For those of you that are paying real close attention, I am going to post this at UbuntuForums, too. I sure hope that's okay.

Thanks,

Mike..

The information is found in *.desktop files. Here's the standard http://standards.freedesktop.org/des...y-spec/latest/

These files are usually found in /usr/share/applications, but not always. Here's the menu spec http://standards.freedesktop.org/men...ec-latest.html

Good stuff to be familiar with in case an application doesn't install a *.desktop file, you can create one. Or it shows up in the menu under a heading that doesn't make sense to you, just edit the *.desktop file to put it where you want.
