The command for adding color to a console

Hello all,

I've been running GentooX for a while now and was wondering, how do you get color into the console window, as in coloring the text? I figured it would be some form like IRC coloring:

x##,## blah blah blah x##,## blah

x would be the signal character and # would be a color number. Does anyone know what x would be in this case? And what are the available colors and what numbers?
