tgz ubuntu backup from amd -> different intel computer

I have a tgz backup of the entire installation of an amd ubuntu 10.04 server. Now, when the computer said a final farewell, I wonder how I could restore to an intel computer?

Should I try to extract the files to the root and hope for the best? Or, should I rather install the server from scratch, and try to copy in the backupfiles some way? Should I rather install a newer version right away?

I have apache, php, mysql, rails (redmine) and webmin installed (these are the most important parts).

You should probably build a new system with Ubuntu 10.04 and restore over it.
Then, backup just the data and base cfgs and then build an up to date system and try and re-use the data.
The cfgs may need updating to match the new system.
