text mode paint program for linux?

I am looking for a text mode paint program for linux.

Like... something that uses ncurses or something to paint images without having X installed.

Does such a program exist???

If so where can I find it?

I did some googeling but nothing came up.

Any graphical paint program (including the gimp) can be launched from a text mode prompt (providing your running a GUI desktop, or at least an X server).

No graphical program of any kind can run without some graphical environment (like a GUI desktop).

And I can't imagine how you would interactively "paint" without graphics. Or how you can "display" anything "graphical" ... without any graphics.

So ... WHAT exactly are you looking for?!? What exactly is the problem you're trying to solve? Give us a bit more "context" (for example, why you can't use an interactive program like the Gimp while running a GUI desktop, if, in fact, that's the case).

The "context" will help us give you a decent solution.

Thanx in advance .. PSM

You can not run a graphical manipulation program of any sort without an X server. Without X, you have no mouse. With no mouse, you can not paint.

I heard of something called GTKFB that allows GUI apps to run without X.

In case you didn't notice, I was asking the same question as you.

And yes, of *course* you can "paint" without a mouse. For example: a stylus, a touch screen or even cursor keys. You can create an entire image with The Gimp and a script-foo file without displaying a single pixel. You can convert, resize, crop or filter with a command-line ImageMagick script. Et cetera, ad infinitum ;)

As Leopard and I asked, your question seems to be:

Is there a graphical program (a paint program) that works without graphics (in text mode)?
I *think* you're asking a legitimate question. But we don't quite understand - we're missing something.

What exactly are you trying to do? What is the "context"?

Please clarify.

You can edit SVG files and apply mathematical functions to images in the command line with no mouse or display, but I don't think you can "paint" freehand.

Sorry i wasn't more specific. I have a Linux distro that has no X and I don't plan on adding an X server to it.

I was just wondering if there was a painting program that would let you paint without X.
