Question Text document displays only symbols

When I try to open text file with mouse pad or kate write all I see is PK and in small letters HF over TF_
I have no idea how this happened. Can anyone help? How do I get my text document back? Using XFCE4.6.1, mousepad and kate write for my journal. Properties says its a zip archive but I didn't do that. Anyway tried to unzip it and got:
Code:
PowerJustice may be a plain executable, not an archive
unzip: cannot find zipfile directory in one of PowerJustice or
PowerJustice.zip, and cannot find PowerJustice.ZIP, period.
Thanks

Try

file PowerJustice

Was this file created on MS or copied to/from MS (or Mac?)

chrism01 thanks,
Document was created in mousepad... not copied to MS or Mac... tried to open it with KWord, vi, emac? Emac just displays PK^C^D^T, what does this mean? Don't know what happened. Cmd line directory:
Code:
$cd /home/usr/Desktop/myjournal
$ls
PowerJustice PowerJustice~ PowerJustice~~
File Properties says the file is only 5b... think document is lost. Thanks any way for trying to help.

I did guess you would miss that

file is the name of a command used to display the type of the file in question!

Example:
Code:
anisha@linux-uitj:~> file ak.c
ak.c: ASCII C program text

You can also take the file to windows then use some of the above software meant for windows.
