Hi there!

I have Linux mandrake 9.2 Download edition, which would fill 3 cds. I have been using it for about 4 months now. Now I would like to install new software: Tex.

I think it is not on these cds so where can I get it on the web?

I hope Tex is the right name, I mean a Text Writing Programme with which you can write for example a thesis (Doktorarbeit) or a work for university with index marks and source references.

Doesn't Mandrake 9.2 contain tex? 'Cause 8.2, 9.0 and 9.1 did. Try issuing latex and see what happens.

Oh, BTW, I use emacs for writing tex-documents all the time. You get highlightning and all :) and you can compile and view the document from inside emacs.

Or you could use LyX which is some kind of more fancy tex-editor.

I'm sorry, but what do you mean with is this right? TeX is a... Well, see here. CTAN, the Comprehensive TeX Archive Network has loads of TeX stuff: http://www.ctan.org/. And here is the TeX starter page.

/usr/share/texmf is the base directory of several flavors of tex and latex, such as asmtex, pdftex,latex, jadetex, bibtex.

You may need to install the package you want. Type urpmq tex to get an idea of the packages you can install. Or use the MCC software installer and search for tex to find the packages that way.

A good starting point for information and documentation is the www.ctan.org site on the web. Your system may have the tex document browser installed. Try entering texdoctk.
If the tetex package is installed, you have some html manuals you can study from. The starting point is at file:/usr/share/texmf/doc/newhelpindex.html
