Question testing a port


I would like to know how to test the ports (ex.25,53 etc)of my server if its ON or OFF,of my SLES9. And pls help me on how to open a port in SLES9

For testing the ports the definitive best tool is nmap if it's not in the disks google it and download, as for opening a port I only used opensuse and do it through yast2 I don't know how can it be done in sles. Maybe someone else know
