Test on Asus Router N55U

I have an unused router ASUS N55U and I would like to sell it. I don't want it to be broken, what tests can I run to figure it out? Please note that I don't have internet on the phone line and I have an old 32 bit laptop with dual boot linux mint 19.3 and windows XP.
For now I have turned on the router using its power supply (the light on the router on / off turns on) and connected the laptop to the router with a lan cable connected to one of the four inputs. Having done this, I was unable to connect via browser to the router address 192.168.1.1, the page is unreachable in both linux (via FF) and windows (via IE and FF).
During the test, the 2.4 GHz led and the 5 GHz led also turned on (without flashing) after several minutes.
Did I fail to do something?

Check the IP address of the laptop itself. Is it in the expected range i.e. 192.168.1.XXX? What is the gateway address? That should be the routers address used to connect to its web setup. This assumes the laptop is configured for DHCP.

How can I check the real IP address and the gateway address? I saw the address 192.168.1.1 in the router manual in which there is nothing about gateway address.

When you boot the laptop with Mint it should assuming it is using DHCP should get an IP address from the router. Open a terminal window and look at the output of the commands
ip a
ip r

You should see something like:
Code:
2: enp0s25: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qdisc pfifo_fast state UP group default qlen 1000
   link/ether bc:30:5b:b9:d1:5a brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
inet 192.168.1.XXX/24 brd 192.168.1.255 scope global noprefixroute dynamic enp0s25
and
Code:
default via 192.168.1.1 dev enp0s25 proto dhcp metric 100
192.168.1.0/24 dev enp0s25 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.1.XXX metric 100
192.168.1.1 dev enp0s25 proto static scope link metric 100
The inet 192.168.1.XXX is the IP address assigned by the router and default via 192.168.1.1 shows the gateway address which is the address of the router. If the subnet does not match i.e 192.168.1.xxx does not match or is empty your not using DHCP or something else is wrong. If they do then try connecting to the router via the default address if it is different from 192.168.1.1

Hi,

Without a active DSL you cannot test that side of the router as a gateway. If you set the Laptops IP And the kernel routing table from command line as root from terminal by;
Code:
ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.10
route add default gw 192.168.1.1

ifconfig # will show IP
route -n #will show kernel routing table
You should then be able to 'ping 192.168.1.1' or access via a browser using IP of gateway 192.168.1.1.

I do suggest that you do a 'man ifconfig' and 'man route' to understand the commands with options.

As I said earlier you cannot test the DSL side without a active line. So you cannot confirm operable DSL so any buyer be aware of that.

EDIT: If you wish to see all device information then use as root 'ifconfig -a'. Again 'man ifconfig' to see options.

Hope this helps.
Have fun & enjoy Gnu/Linux!

You can daisy chain the routers to simulate wan.

I'd reset it to OEM using the (I forget 30,30,30?? reset) full reset.

From there be sure you know how to access it. Some of the ASUS updates may have changed how you access it on full reset.

We don't know if someone put something like Merlin on it either.
