terminal services and linux
Hello...
i was just wondering what kind of terminal server can handle let's say 16 terminals hooked up onto him all in a X session?? Hope you understand what I'm trying to ask..I'm new to linux and networking... Is this even possible?? best regards, Uros |
I'd say with plenty of RAM and a grunty
CPU no problem with most Linux-distros. X has been built/designed with all that in mind, so it really shouldn't be to much of an issue ... I've run four simultaneous sessions of a PIII 400 with 256 MB with no problem (in fact the CPU load was under 5% at most times, and process load was <2 at all times ... even with Open Office running)... Cheers, Tink |
Thanks for the answer...
Is there a thingy that would look like that old style terminal...I would need a monitor and a keyboard and a mouse all hooked up to a terminal server... I don't even know if this exists?? Anyone knows?? Best regards, Uros |
You can get old console WISE terminals
and special cards that will allow up to 16 serial connections for the PC... however, you wouldn't get X on those, just console. I've seen some of those dumb terminals advertised for 40 bucks :) If you want X you'll need to get thin-clients (graphical terminals) which are a bit of a different pricerange, and for performance reasons use Ethernet rather than serial :) Look at this thing and its "bigger brothers" Cheers, Tink |
Thanks....
Damn, I thought that this terminal were cheeper...like 200 buck max...oh well..thanks anyway.. best regards, Uros |
