Terminal requiring a password

Hi, I am brand new to Linux, and not very computer savvy- every time i try to type a command, after I hit enter after the first one, it asks for a password, but won't recognize anything I type. So basically, I cannot use any commands. Any ideas?

Two things:

1) What commands are you trying that require a password?
2) The password prompt in the terminal does not echo the characters you type back at you, so it will look like nothing is happening, but just type like normal and hit enter.

If suggestion #2 in the above post doesn't resolve the problem, post an example of a command you tried as many commands require spaces in particular locations, only lower case letters, etc.
