after several attempts to install rpm's, my terminal now hangs on any install or unistall commands. all other simple commands ie browsing files etc, seem to be working fine.

i can no longer run a program from the terminal. the only way i can run a program now, is by clicking on its icon. my terminal won't reset any more either, i have to close it and open it back up.

pretty much everything i did i posted in the "help me install vlc player" post. i can not figure out what went wrong. i have tried uninstalling rpms, but the terminal just hangs for hours. i can't even get any of the apt programs going.

if you think you could help me please do, and thanks. i will not stop using rh9, i will not be discouraged.

if i reinstall the kernel will this reset everything? i can't find any info on this.

ok if i restart with the old kernel 2.4.20-8, everything seems to be fine. i installed the multi-gnome-terminal to check and it installed and ran from the terminal with no problems.

i am so scared i will mess up again. should i reinstall the newest kernel again? should i uninstall it first? i have been reading since yesterday about what could have happened with still no clue.
