tbl | troff tmac.n - > Users.fmtd causes fatal error.

linux kernel 2.6, Slackware 12.0

semoi@darkstar:~/elm_tbl$ tbl | troff tmac.n - > Users.fmtd
troff: fatal error: can't open `tmac.n': No such file or directory
semoi@darkstar:~/elm_tbl$ locate tmac.n
If I less, I read on the top 'Format with: "tbl | troff tmac.n - > Users.fmtd". But tmac.n is missing; not on the hard disk. Any suggestion would be welcome.
