tbird - what does it fetch from the server: mails or headers
 
good day dear linux-experts


well i am a bit new to linux and all that opensource things.

today i have a question regarding Thunderbird:
tbird - what does it fetch from the server: mails or headers?

i have no glue.

well - do i have the option to configure the behaviour!?

depends on how you set it up, and which protocol you use.

If you use POP3, a client would usually download the entire mail messages, and that is also the default setting in Thunderbird. But you can also set it to read headers only, so it can display a list of new mail with sender, subject etc. When you click on a message to read it, the actual message text is retrieved.

If you use IMAP, it's more typical to download headers only, and the remainder when needed.

Yes. Go to Edit/Account Settings/Server Settings. With a POP3 account, you can check or uncheck the option "Download headers only" (I don't know the exact wording, I only have a POP3 account configured on a German T-Bird). Woth IMAP accounts, this option is not available.
