Task Priority

Why does my KDE desktop grind to a crawl when I'm downloading a file. I have a fast PC... I don't understand??? Can I set the task priority to 'normal' like in XP to free up some cpu cycles?

thanks, olias

You could try messing with nice but during a download it would be kind of pointless unless the download took long enough to make it worth it.

What browser are you using to download and have you tried any others to see if they make the same effect?

"Why does my KDE desktop grind to a crawl when I'm downloading a file."

This is more likely to be a memory size problem than a CPU speed problem. How much memory do you have and how fast is your CPU?

Thanks guys for your help. I have an Athlon XP 3200+ Barton on a nForce2 board with 512MB of DDR memory running at 400MHz. I'm using Slack 9.1 and Mozilla. I installed only the nvnet drivers for the integrated nic.

I did some test with burning a cd, watching a divx movie and copping a large file from one partition to another. I found no crawlege... only happens while downloading a big file like a 650MB+ ISO file. I also tried downloading with Konqueror and it also slowed the desktop to the point that the mouse pointer will hesitate to move.

Any ideas? Thanks, olias

With that hardware cofiguration you should not have any hardware bottlenecks. I lean toward trickykid's idea that some piece of software is being a resource hog. What about the "nvnet drivers for the integrated nic"?

I'll remove the nvnet driver and disable the onboard nic. I'll then try a D-Link 10/100 card I have.

Thanks again... I report back, olias

Well the D-Link card worked. I didn't have to install any drivers and now Noooo Slooow downs. :D Thanks guys... I guess integrated nics suck or more likely just immature nForce drivers for Linux.
