Tarballs & Portage

A few unrelated questions:

1. Could somebody either give me a link to a site that explains installing from source pretty well, or just post it in the forums. It would be of great help

2. I also heard that portage, Gentoo's Package Manager is really easy to use. Is there a way to have portage on anything except Gentoo? I would really like Portage, but Gentoo is far to difficult for me to install, I've read all the install manuals on Gentoo's site and everything.

^^^It would be very helpful if anyone could answer those two questions^^^

Thanks, Kodaxx

Since your first question has been well answered, I shall try to help you with the second.

While portage is an incredibly good package manager, and it is feasible to install it on Fedora, it's not all that practical. To the best of my knowledge, you can do perfectly well using rpm's in Fedora, and then just compile anything else you may need from source. If you are still intent upon portage, the following links may help:

When it comes right down to it, if you wish to experience the sheer awesomeness of portage, you should just go ahead and install gentoo. Seemingly a daunting task, it's really not so bad. The gentoo handbook is actually very good.
