I've decompressed a tarball from a Plančte Linux (french mag) to my home directory and have tried to ./configure [enter]. All I get is a file missing message and it's no better as root. Seems strange, is the tarball faulty? Or can I try make straight away?
Not all tarballs have configure scripts - some claim they're outdated. If there's no config script or the README says you don't need to, just 'make'. Otherwise, you do have a problem, though - just not sure what it is. Did the mag include a checksum and all that? I dunno - probably just 'make' - or hell, it might be precompiled and just tarred and zipped to save space.
OK thanks, I've found another article on the Open Office installation tarball and no mention is made of ./configure so there's light at the end of the tunnel. If I can't get it installed, I'll get back, thanks again.
