I think he did try updatedb and locate as root, but was still getting "command not found" errors. Look for the "slocate" package in YaST, that should install updatedb and locate (heh, I would think that most distros would come with these installed already. Maybe SuSe uses something else to look for stuff, though).

Yast dosen't show a slocate package. IDK maybe I got a buggy version of suse. It seems nothing is where it is supposed to be. Maybe I should try another distro?

It would also help if I knew anyone who knew Linux at all. That way they could show me how to do things, and what does what instead of me trying to learn it all through trial and error.

I checked out 3 books from the library, but they don't talk too much about installing anything. They are all on administration of a Linux system.

That's up to you. I've never used SuSe, so I don't know what it's like really.

Try them out, see which one you like. I used Fedora once (either 2 or 3, I can't remember) and that was pretty easy to use IMO.

I like the mepis 3.3, but I can't get it to install my nvidia drivers. Maybe I'll take a stab at it tomorrow as I am tired and frustrated, and need to take a break before I kick my box.
