Smile tar backup question, Email if failed.

I am writing a bash script that will use tar to do a differential backup. I am trying to find a way to have the job email me if it doesn't finish. Any ideas. I do want to keep it simple.

Compose a short simple letter to yourself. With the shell script as a wrapper for the tar task, have the script mail the letter to you if the tar exit code is anything other than 0.

Remember I am not a total noob but am somewhat at scripting. Can you post an example? Thanks.
