There are many ways to access the tape... how are the files backed up? dump, tar, other?

We need to know that first.

If you are using a commercial program it would be best to use the same utilities to restore your files.

Something like (RecoverEDGE -- googled for it so I don't know).

ftp://ftp.microlite.com/media/curren..._Reference.pdf

That is the white paper for using it. Do you have this utility?

is there no way to browse the contents of the tape without using backupedge.....i've been emailing their techsupport and they tell me what to do but there restore utility is stupid

Without knowing how the data is stored on the tape... not really. It involves way more work than I think you really want to do. There are tools that can be used to browse the tape... and you can read all the whitepapers trying to discover how they store information. But you are recreating the wheel here with a low chance of success.
