Talking Taking pictures with webcam

I am trying to setup my Logitech 4000 Pro webcam so that I can capture images (in bmp format, preferably) very frequently (like 30 frames per sec).

I am using AMD 2.7 Ghz, and the webcam is connected thru usb port.

In addition,
I am using Slackware 9.0 with hotplug.

My problems are simply(?),
1) how to install the webcam in slackware 9.0
2) how to test whether the webcam has been successfully installed
2) how to access the webcam using c programming language

I am hopeless ignorant about Linux world, and I beg you to save me from professional language. Thank you in advance.
