taken to graphical logon menu when use 'control alt backspace'

Hi,
Very much a newbie and a bit lost.
I wish to work on occasions outside of Xwindows.
When I attempt to use 'control alt backspace' instead of giving me a command line I get the graphical login screen.
The session options do not give me an option of the ordinary command prompt amongst the choices of session so can't start at command prompt at startup.

I am using linux mint cassandra on pc with fx5200nvidia card, and amd sempron 64 bit 2800 processor.

Thanks for any help.

Ctl+Alt+Backspace is the command to kill the XWindows server.

If you have getty process's enabled for /dev/tty1, tty2 ... etc then you will have virtual consoles on F1, F2 ... etc.

To get to one of the virtual consoles you nedd Ctl+Alt+F1, F2 ... etc.

ctrl+alt+Fx (where x is normally 1-4) shopudl give you a text shell.

to get back to X11 use ctrl+alt+F7 (F6 on some distros)

if you need to kill the x server totally (ctrl+alt+backspace normally only restarts it)
then use init 3 as root (or with sudo)

To get a command-line, why not just open a terminal window?

Thanks for help regarding kiling X

Thank you all for your help.
Just starting out learning about linux, following examples from a book and when I go to do something and what followed was not as expected - got a bit OCD about it.

Thanks again.

ahh, most linuc books are a tad out of date, when the normal situation was to log in in text mode then type startx to get a graphical desktop, that would go back to command line wehn you hit ctrl+alt+backspace

anyway for most command lien work just open up a terminal
(normally under kicker>system>terminal (KDE) or applications>Terminal in gnome
(terminal can somtimes be called xterm)
