System won't boot up, just gives grub rescue> prompt..

Hi, I just installed Ubuntu 10.04. After I installed it, I restarted my computer and ran Windows 7. Later, I turned off my computer and found that the next time I turned on my computer, and every time after that unless I have the Ubuntu disk in my drive, I would get the message: ERROR, boot file not found (or something like that, sorry I don't care to restart my computer to read the exact words). Then it gives a prompt that says: grub rescue>

I'll keep it short and sweet, what the heck do I do?

reread the many many dual boot "how to's" and dual boot help pages on the ubuntu forum and wiki

it will be in the install instructions
where did you install grub ? -- it looks like it is not on the windows MBR
? the first linux partition ?
if so did you use "gparted-live cd " to make the linux/grub boot partition "bootable" and mark the windows boot partition as "NOT bootable"

That's because grub is installed on the MBR, and pointing to that "drive not plugged in". You have to do a update-grub to a drive and partition that will always be plugged in.
