System Tray icon disapeared in Lbuntu 12.04

I recently installed Lubuntu 12.04

However the system tray icon has vanished from the panel at the bottom. This makes it very difficult to connect to the internet. There is no sign that it is on the panel. I have recived no notifications of anything. Also there is no blank space on teh panel or similar.

If I right click on the panel and go to Panel Preferences and open the panel applets tab, the System tray is listed as being on the panel.

I have tried removing it from the list of panel applets and then adding it again and I have tried creating a new panel from scratch, neither of which worked

Thank you for you help

It's possible that the panel is present, but that nm-applet isn't running, and the panel is empty. Try running nm-applet from a terminal window or run dialog (alt-F2 on the desktop), and see if that fixes your problem.

Dear RockDoctor. Thank you very much. This did not actually help at all. I have now reinstalled Lubuntu to resolve this problem. Cheers. Sam :-)
