System Suspend
Hi!
I am new to Red Hat Linux and recently have encountered a problem . Approximately every 20 - 25 minutes, the computer beeps 3 times following a system suspension. However, when a key on the keyboard is hit, the system resumes after the computer beeping once. These are the messages from the system logs: Jul 6 14:57:47 adler apmd[2822]: Normal Resume after 00:00:08 (-1% unknown) AC power Jul 6 15:07:46 adler su(pam_unix)[15280]: session opened for user root by gavita(uid=500) Jul 6 15:09:42 adler su(pam_unix)[15374]: session opened for user root by gavita(uid=500) Jul 6 15:11:59 adler su(pam_unix)[15459]: session opened for user root by gavita(uid=500) Jul 6 15:19:49 adler su(pam_unix)[15593]: session opened for user root by gavita(uid=500) Jul 6 15:21:16 adler su(pam_unix)[15676]: session opened for user root by gavita(uid=500) Jul 6 15:22:23 adler userhelper: pam_timestamp: timestamp file `/var/run/sudo/gavita/unknown:root' is too old, disallowing access to up2date for UID 500 Jul 6 15:22:37 adler network: Shutting down interface eth0: succeeded Jul 6 15:22:37 adler network: Shutting down loopback interface: succeeded Jul 6 15:22:37 adler apmd[2822]: System Suspend Jul 6 15:22:38 adler kernel: usb-ohci.c: USB suspend: usb-00:03.0 Jul 6 15:22:38 adler kernel: usb-ohci.c: USB suspend: usb-00:03.1 Jul 6 15:22:38 adler kernel: ehci-hcd 00:03.2: suspend to state 3 Jul 6 16:22:43 adler kernel: ac97_codec: AC97 Audio codec, id: ADS112 (Unknown) Jul 6 16:22:43 adler kernel: usb-ohci.c: USB continue: usb-00:03.0 from host wakeup Jul 6 16:22:43 adler kernel: usb-ohci.c: USB continue: usb-00:03.1 from host wakeup Jul 6 16:22:43 adler kernel: ehci-hcd 00:03.2: resume Jul 6 15:22:43 adler kernel: ip_tables: (C) 2000-2002 Netfilter core team Jul 6 15:22:43 adler kernel: ip_tables: (C) 2000-2002 Netfilter core team Jul 6 15:22:45 adler kernel: eth0: Media Link On 100mbps full-duplex Jul 6 15:22:46 adler dhclient: DHCPREQUEST on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 Jul 6 15:22:46 adler dhclient: DHCPNAK from 143.167.56.251 Jul 6 15:22:46 adler dhclient: DHCPDISCOVER on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 6 Jul 6 15:22:46 adler dhclient: DHCPOFFER from 143.167.48.253 Jul 6 15:22:46 adler dhclient: DHCPREQUEST on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 Jul 6 15:22:46 adler dhclient: DHCPACK from 143.167.48.253 Jul 6 15:22:46 adler dhclient: bound to 143.167.96.165 -- renewal in 17172 seconds. Does this happen independent whether you are working or the computer is
idle ? Try to boot passing apm=off acpi=off to the kernel. |
>Does this happen independent whether you are working or the computer is
>idle ? Yes this problem occurs whether or not I am doing work on the computer or when the computer is idle. >Try to boot passing >apm=off acpi=off >to the kernel. I am sorry but I am really new to linux and I am not sure how to do what you ahve asked me to do. However, after reading some other website, I did the following using the terminal: /sbin/chkconfig apmd off /sbin/service apmd stop But even after those commands and rebooting, I am still having the same problem. |
Do you use GRUB or LILO as boot loader ?
Besides that what is the output of hdparm -C hdparm -i hdparm -v |
I think I am using GRUB and when I enter the
hdparm -C hdparm -i hdparm -v this is the output ..... bash: hdparm: command not found |
Depending on the distribution:
either /sbin/hdparm or /bin/hdparm with the option mentioned in my previous replay. or change user to root and issue hdparm with the options given below. Changing user happens in a konsole window with: su |

Oooops sorry. I gave you an incomplete syntax.
The command shall be run against your hard disk: So assuming /dev/hda is your harddrive /sbin/hdparm -C /dev/hda /sbin/hdparm -i /dev/hda /sbin/hdparm -v /dev/hda |

Well this looks fine.
Try now the boot options: acpi=off apm=off When you are at the GRUB boot menu hit the "e" key in order to edit the boot options. |
I have tried to reboot my computer and have tried hitting the 'e' button, but nothing happens. Am I doing something wrong?
|
Wenn you are at the GRUB menu, press first [TAB] and then "e".
Tab will stop the count-down and e will allow you to edit the boot options. If this does not help then edit your /boot/grub/grub.conf and add the options at the boot line for the kernel you are using. |
Nothing happened even after pressing the [TAB] key. I have edited the grub.conf and I am attaching the edited file below:
# grub.conf generated by anaconda # # Note that you do not have to rerun grub after making changes to this file # NOTICE: You have a /boot partition. This means that # all kernel and initrd paths are relative to /boot/, eg. # root (hd0,0) # kernel /vmlinuz-version ro root=/dev/hda3 # initrd /initrd-version.img #boot=/dev/hda default=0 timeout=10 splashimage=(hd0,0)/grub/splash.xpm.gz password --md5 $1$s/GPqwjk$DzO2cg7G4YqPcHvzQsAEW/ title Red Hat Linux (2.4.20-8) root (hd0,0) kernel /vmlinuz-2.4.20-8 ro root=LABEL=/ hdc=ide-scsi acpi=off apm=off initrd /initrd-2.4.20-8.img Have I done it right? |
Yes Sir!
GOOD LUCK! |
