System running very slow following upgrade to Suse 9.1 and KDE 3.2

I have recently upgraded to Suse 9.1 and KDE 3.2 and since doing so my system runs very slowly

Starting KDE takes in excess of 5 minutes from log on. It seems to stop for a long time on about 71% on the spalsh screen when it reads 'loading panel' KDE then appears but there is no kicker or other panel for about 2 minutes it then proceeds to slowly load various programs.

Once it is working starting a program takes a very long time, for example the Control Panel or Konqueror. Also anything that requires root access seems to take a long time.

Running as root does not speed the system up at all.

Can anyone suggest what the problem is

Well I had a similar problem. I have used 3 linux distros till now, and in all 3 the problem has happened when my "hostname" wasn't configured properly.

When I used to run "gnome-system-monitor", I found that the processor activity remains zero for a very long time after I execute a program. Then it jumped to 100% and the program would load. Is something similar happening in your case?

And the problem didnt happen in runlevel 3, it happened only when I started the X server.

So check it out, try setting your "hostname" properly in the internet connection settings.

I hope it helps

Thanks I will try that this evening I am at work at the moment

By hostname do you mean the name my computer gave itself ? It seems to call itself after the adsl router it uses to connect to the internet?

Many thanks that seems to have sorted it out. KDE now loads quickly and programs launch without giving me time to make a cup of tea

what did you do to remedy this issue? I'm having the same problem except with Suse 9.2. Kicker seems to take all my cpu power. I never had this issue when I had 9.1 loaded.
